Carterton
Carterton is located in the Wairarapa region, at the heart of the Classic NZ Wine Trail.
Artists are drawn to Carterton for its inspiring landscapes, with the Tararua mountain range to the west, dramatic coastlines to the east, and farmland and grapevines in between.
The Red Moa gallery on the eclectic main street showcases the town’s artistic soul. Check out antique stores, second hand shops and cafes too. An eclectic art trail, the Main Artery, passes through Carterton and showcases the work of local artists.
Established in 1857 to house the workers who built the road from Greytown to Masterton, Carterton is well known for its annual Daffodil Carnival (September) when you can pick armloads of daffodils from a large flower-packed paddock. Every May, Carterton hosts the Oversew Fashion Awards, showcasing fashion design through 'upcycling'.
It's also famouss for having the world's first transsexual Mayor and MP, Georgina Beyer.
